L'Église Saint-James

Mise en valeur du patrimoine collectif

Au cours des derniers mois, la Caisse d'économie solidaire s'est associée à des projets collectifs d'envergure. Sa plus récente association participe à la mise en valeur de l'un des joyaux du patrimoine religieux bâti en 1888. Classée monument historique, l'église méthodiste unie Saint-James, rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest à Montréal, recevra un financement de plus de 3 millions de dollars. Son architecture de style gothique victorien et ses gradins aménagés en amphithéâtre en font un édifice unique. Sa façade, cachée pendant plus de 80 ans par des commerces, vient de subir une cure de jouvence. L'ancien lieu de culte est devenu un lieu de vie culturelle et communautaire.

« C'est en plein dans notre créneau culturel, se réjouit Bernard Ndour, analyste financier à la Caisse. Nous agissons en tant que caisse du changement social et environnemental en préservant un pan de notre histoire collective. Nous faisons également en sorte que ce patrimoine de grande valeur appartienne à toute la communauté. »

ST. James United Church
Our most recent venture consists in recapturing the former glory of one of Quebec's religious heritage buildings, situated on Ste-Catherine Street in Montreal. Dating back to 1888, St. James United Church is listed as a national historic site of Canada and shall be awarded over $3 million in financial assistance.

The exterior of the church's Victorian neo-gothic style and the interior's Akron style amphitheatre with its choir loft make St. James a unique Montreal landmark. Commercial buildings erected in front of the church over 80 years ago have finally been demolished and St. James is again open to the busy street-life in the heart of Montreal. The congregation and its partners host a variety of outreach programs for the homeless, the elderly and the urban poor. It also offers a home to several community organizations and musical ensembles thus making St. James United Church ‘‘ fit right in with our vision'' as financial analyst Bernard Ndour commented. ‘‘The Caisse is committed to social and environmental change while protecting our collective history. We are contributing towards having this valuable heritage site belong to the entire community.”
